Woo-dolls

Lisbeth

It just started with a dream.

My friend, Bitte, dreamt of me and having multicoloured thread falling from the heaven on me. In the colour of the rainbow. Then another good friend of mine, Siri, gave me a handcarved sheepbone and a rainbow coloured yarn. I remembered the pinnekött (traditional Norwegian Christmas food made from lambribbs)  from New Year’s Eve, and the bones which remained after the feast…

And so I started knitting,  knitting and I made lots of hats.

The following summer I was at a Viking market. There I learnt how to do Oslo-stitch, an ancient method  used by the Vikings around Oslo. I fell in love with that. One uses bone needles for that. And preferably handspun yarn.

So now I had a new technique to make even more hats. I wanted to use some old Viking design for the hats. Well, I can tell you that many of my friends have a Viking-hat now. ;-)

Next step was to learn how to felt, because I bought two bags of wool from a local farmer. It was my dear friend, Lisbeth, how showed me the dry or needle felting with which you can form the material as you wish. And small cute heads came out from my mind and my hands. Of course with hats. It was around Christmas and I had the time to study the so called Scandinavian tomte-tradition. I got excited about it. Well, I can see them. :-)

It was a hard period in my life so I was glad to have a needle in my hand and working with wool.

Almost felt like doing woodoo. And it was just what I needed then.

I gave a Swedish name to these dolls first: tovadockor (felted dolls), but then I wanted to have an English name too. That’s how they became woo-dolls.

These woo-dolls are mainly made from locally produced wool. We use the traditional Oslo-stitch for the body of the figures, and needle-felting for the heads. The untreated wool contains lanoline which has a calming and pain reliefing effect. That’s why we recommend our products especially to small kids and for adults who want to caress their inner child.

Ask for more info, price. The dolls can also be custom made.
